The roller stem length matters on Clopay doors more than some brands because their hinge geometry is tighter. A 4-inch stem where a 4.5-inch is needed leaves the roller head riding against the hinge ear; a 4.5-inch where 4-inch belongs lets the roller walk in the track during wind load.

Signs Your Clopay Roller Replacement Is Failing

• Grinding or rumbling during open/close cycles. The roller bearings have dried out or the nylon wheel has cracked. On Clopay doors we see this first on the top roller, which carries the most track curvature stress during the vertical-to-horizontal transition.
• The door catches or stalls at the same height every time. A single seized roller acts like a brake at that point in the track. In Tacoma’s wet winters, we find this on rollers that haven’t been lubricated in three-plus years.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s what’s safe to check yourself: with the door closed, inspect each roller through the gap between door sections. Look for cracks in the nylon wheel, rust on steel rollers, or a roller sitting crooked in the track. You can lubricate the roller stem and bearing with a silicone-based garage door lubricant. Don’t use WD-40; it attracts grit and accelerates wear.

What goes wrong with DIY roller replacement: the door must be in the fully open position with the tension released from the spring system before you can remove a roller from the track. On a torsion-spring Clopay door, that means winding down the spring with winding bars. The stored energy in a torsion spring can cause serious injury if released incorrectly.
